Ignatius Johannes Stracké was born in Dorsten, Germany in 1789 and was the founder of the Stracké dynasty of sculptors and painters. He was taught by the noted sculptor, Christian Daniel Rauch, at the Berlin Academy of Art. On completion of his studies, he became director at the Royal Academy for Art and Design at
‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.
In 1812 he married Ursula Reuter (Ruijter) with whom he produced three sons, Johan Theodore, Gottfried and Frans, who also became sculptors. They had one daughter, Maria Francisca, but little is known about her. They moved to Arnhem in 1842 where Ignatius died in 1875.
The sculptor, Gottfried Kappen (1906-1981) from Gladbeck, was the great-grandson of Gottfried Stracké, after whom he was named.
