| Note | At some point, Marcus may have changed the spelling of his surname from Arendsen to Arendzen. This agrees with something that my grandfather had told me - that the family surname was altered so that it sounded less "foreign" in the Netherlands. Marcus appears under both names in different official registers but in 1855, at the time of the marriage of his daughter Anna Maria (aged 37), he was still known as Arendsen. <p></p> <p>It's possible of course that Marcus kept the original spelling but that the name was altered at the registration of the birth of his son Johannes Juriaan.</p> |
