Petrus Arendzen made several hundred etchings so I have been forced to make a selection. However, it is my intention eventually to catalogue and publish as much of his work as I can.
Most of the etchings on these pages are copies from Old Masters. However, for brevity, I have not indicated in the titles of the etchings that they are “after” the originals.
The Rijksmuseum lists more than one hundred works by Petrus. If you click the link to the Rijksmuseum under ‘Useful Links’ you can search their collection.
Portrait of Anna Wijmer by a follower of Rembrandt.
Held in the Six Collection in Amsterdam, the portrait of Anna Wijmer has been rejected as a work by Rembrandt and is now considered to be the work of a follower. Presumably, at the time when Petrus made the etching, the original was assumed to be by Rembrandt himself.
The etching, like many others was printed on vellum, which has great longevity but unfortunately seems prone to wrinkling. The work is signed by him and was published by Obach & Co in 1888.
